Bad MicroSD Card

Two years ago, I bought three PNY MicroSD cards, 32GB. One of them isn't recognized, not even by diskpart. That's annoying. These haven't been used very much, and I wonder why the computer doesn't see it. The MicroSD cards are the only ones I've had fail, and I think I'm up to three bad ones now - two Sandisk and this PNY. At least I've never had one go bad while it was recording. Memory cards are one of the drawbacks of digital photography. A card can go bad while you're using it to record, and you won't know it.

Your camera only takes MicroSD right?

Just the little cameras - GoPro, Insta360, and DJI Pocket - take the small cards.

So far (knock on wood -- or a plastic facsimile), I have only lost one SD card out of dozens but have had two micro SD cards go bad -- a large percentage of the 6 or 7 of those I've ever bought. The one SD card was a PNY and when I contacted them for a replacement, they required a sales receipt and place of purchase! This was asking a lot -- who keeps receipts for over a year on a 30.00 purchase? I would have thought they would like to have the card back to see where their quality control failed. Because of their
demands, I vowed never to purchase PNY cards again, and I haven't. (I'm sure someone on UHH will post they always save all their receipts -- well, 99% of us do not for small purchases, just larger, more expensive items).

Funny about PNY. I thought the same thing: what went wrong with the card? Two SanDisk Micro cards show up as "Locked," so I can't do anything with them. I scan important receipts. Although, I bet I can find a receipt if I look on Amazon.

I have a couple of PLC that take the small card and my Surface Pro takes the small card.

I hate to see card slots disappearing from devices. They're so convenient.

I don't remember if your Samsung Galaxy S10 has a microSD card slot? I know the newer one like my wife S22 and my S23 don't.

In what way is it not recognized? Does it even appear as a peripheral device?
Rather than putting the card straight into your computer, try an SD card reader if you have one. No harm in trying.

I've never had a card fail on me. But I am probably just lucky.

Nope! I can't add an SD card, and I can't replace the battery. That's progress.

If I remember correctly my wife S4 can change battery and add SD card. I think her S8 can add memory card but not change battery. Yes that's progress according to Apple. Apple did it first and others followed.

My J3 Galaxy can do that. I'll continue using it as a non-phone.

First off, Manufacturers don't have time to fully test their flash memory products before they ship them, so the first thing that I do when I get at new flash/SD, etc, is to test it myself (it uses up one of the write cycles, but it is worth it). I use a free program called "h2testw" which fills the card and then makes sure that it can read it back. If the card is big or slow, it takes a while, so I start it off and leave it overnight.

I would estimate that as many as 5% of the flash or SD card that I buy fail the test, and I return them. I have usually had pretty good luck with Microcenter flash, but I recently bought a 5 pack, and 2 of them were bad. I returned all 5, no problem (I will wait a while before I buy more of that type in case it was a bad batch).

Secondly, I can't say that I have never had a card fail after I started using it. Below is a picture of my "graveyard" of flash that has failed for one reason or another. Yes, there is a pny in there.

I will also call out the Kingston, because, even though it had a 5 year warranty, they screwed me around rather than honoring it.

I which I could remember the vendor that I had good customer service from (but I can't, and can't find it in my emails). I had a Flash drive go "write-protected" such that I couldn't delete my sensitive data from it (and therefore, I didn't want to send it back). They said, no problem, just send a picture of it being destroyed. I did, and they sent me a refund.

And, then there was Verbatim "Tuff N Tiny" (sadly, they don't make it any more). I have carried one or another on my keychain for probably 20 years. They take a licking, and keep on ticking... have never failed.
